Questions about my card:
Questions about the MasterCard® PayPass and prepaid Cards:
  1. What is PayPass ?
PayPass is the brand under which MasterCard® provided a contactless way to pay using payment cards or other devices (mobile phones, watches, key fobs) to pay in shops by tapping the card or device against a special terminal. PayPass is a fast, convenient and safe alternative to cash payments for everyday low-value articles, such as transport tickets, coffee, sandwiches and fast food or other things.
PayPass may be found on a debit, credit and prepaid cards with the MasterCard® or Maestro Brand Mark. It\'s an additional application to the primary payment application residing on the card.
  2. How do I make a contactless transaction?
At the checkout, after the payment amount is displayed on the terminal, you need to:

    1. Tap your card against the terminal on this sign:

    2. Listen for a beep and look for the green light indicating payment was accepted.
    3. After the payment was completed take the receipt. A payment slip can also be printed from the terminal at the request of the client.

In the case of higher value transactions (above GBP 20,-) payment will be completed traditionally, inserting the standard sized card into a terminal and entering your PIN.
  3. Are there any limits set for the contactless payments?
In the UK the limit is GBP 20,- transaction. Amounts higher than GBP 20,- have to be paid by inserting the card in the terminal and using the PIN. The limit may vary in other countries; in Europe it is usually EUR 25,-, in the USA it is USD 50,-. Higher amounts can be paid in a contactless way depending on the country. The higher transaction will have to be confirmed using your PIN or signature.
  4. How many transactions can I make using the PayPass card within one hour/a day?
There is no limit regarding the number of contactless payments made. A limit has only been set for the daily spending amount of your introductory card with GBP 600,-/day. If you have an upgraded prepaid card (performed the upgrade of the card) then no daily spending limit is set.
  5. Is there any specific period that should elapse between transactions? If so, what is the time interval?
The time interval between contactless transactions is insignificant – upon successful completion of one transaction, the card can be immediately used for another transaction.
  6. What are the benefits of paying for low-value purchases with the contactless card?
Contactless payments with the PayPass card ensure:
    • Speed – you don't have to look for change or your PIN code, and you don't have to wait for transaction authorization and printout of the slip. It is one of the fastest payment forms – compared to a cash transaction; the contactless PayPass payment is considerably quicker.
    • Convenience – you don't have to enter your PIN code or sign a slip when paying for low-value items (up to GBP 20,-).
    • Simplicity – you just need to tap the card against the terminal and that's it- payment is completed.
    • Safety – the card is equipped with a chip, and the PayPass technology allows you to tap the card on the terminal personally, so you don't need to hand the card over to the cashier.
  7. How does the PayPass card work?
Cards using this technology feature a radio frequency antenna embedded in the card. When you hold your card or watch against a special terminal, your card transmits payment details wirelessly, eliminating the need to insert your card in the terminal. Contactless cards communicate with the card terminal via 13.56 Mhz radio frequency, using the ISO14443 communication standard. The payment details are processed traditionally through the secure MasterCard® acceptance network. Within seconds the terminal signals authorization of the purchase with a green light and a beep sound.
  8. Where can I pay with PayPass cards?
PayPass is an add-on to the primary payment instrument: a MasterCard® or Maestro credit, debit or prepaid card. Hence, you can use your card anywhere you see the MasterCard® or Maestro Acceptance Mark. Additionally, you can make speedy payments, making use of the PayPass functionality at locations bearing the contactless payment symbol. Check the list of locations in England accepting PayPass payments.
  9. What do the contactless terminals look like?
Points of sales accepting contactless payments are designated with special symbols and equipped with special card terminals. Anywhere you see the following signs; you can pay quickly by simply touching your card on the terminal.
  10. Can I pay with my PayPass card only in places equipped with contactless terminals?
No, both the MasterCard® credit card and MasterCard® prepaid card are products featuring the standard payment mechanism, namely a chip and a magnetic strip. So in places lacking contactless terminals, the transaction is executed in the traditional manner.
  11. Is the card safe?
Security Yes, PayPass cards are as safe as traditional cards equipped with a chip. Additionally, in the case of a contactless transaction, the card remains in your hands. All this makes card skimming impossible.
  12. Are payments made with this type of card secure? Can you make an accidental transaction?
Is there a chance of double billing, e.g., by tapping the card twice on the terminal?
PayPass transactions are as safe as traditional card payments, thanks to the microprocessor technology used in the production of the cards. Physically, PayPass ensures greater control, because you practically keep the card in your hands throughout the payment transaction, which considerably reduces the risk of card skimming.
Contactless payments are equally safe – in order for the payment to be executed the sales assistant must enable the contactless terminal (by entering the payment amount or accepting the receipt from the till), and the PayPass card must be held extremely close to the terminal - within a distance of 2.5 to 5 cm. All this eliminates the risk of making an accidental payment or executing a transaction without the cardholder\'s knowledge, e.g. by reading the card\'s details with a radio frequency terminal when the card is in the wallet).
  13. Can the antenna embedded in the PayPass card damage other cards in my wallet?
No, contactless technology transactions do not cause or pick up interference from other cards held close by. PayPass is resistant to magnetic fields.
  14. Can I use my PayPass card to pay for higher value purchases?
Yes, the PayPass functionality is an add-on to your standard MasterCard® or Maestro credit, debit or prepaid card. So you can pay with your card wherever you spot the MasterCard® or Maestro Acceptance Mark the traditional way.
  15. Can I return items purchased using my PayPass card? What does the payment confirmation look like?
The procedures of returning goods purchased using a PayPass card are the same as in the case of other forms of payment. The customer receives a receipt from the merchant which is considered evidence of purchase, and on request he may also be provided with a transaction slip.
Questions about MasterCard® PayPass prepaid card:
  1. What is a prepaid card?
It's a payment card, pre-loaded with your own money, which you can then use wherever the payment card is accepted, including on the internet and abroad.
A prepaid card looks just like a normal credit or debit card, with a card number, signature strip and company branding. But prepaid cards are unlike credit cards, which provide you with a line of credit. They are also very different from debit cards that are linked to a bank account with an overdraft facility. This is because you can't borrow money with a prepaid card - you can only spend the money you have loaded onto it.
  2. Do I need a bank account to purchase a MasterCard® PayPass prepaid card?
No, you don't need a bank account for purchasing a MasterCard® PayPass prepaid card. You will receive the card after your purchase of a Watch2Pay, and there are no monthly fees. You pay once and use the card until its expiry date! However, as long as your card is an introductory one – not upgraded – you need to top-up the card via bank transfer. Once you upgrade your card for free, different load options are available.
  3. Who can use this card?
The prepaid card is a payment card for the everyday shopping, intended for all of those who value convenience (no need to carry cash) and time. The card can be purchased by anyone without any unnecessary formalities or need to open a bank account. What more, it can be given to anyone, so it is a perfect tool for paying for everyday low value articles by all family members and for transferring pocket money to teens.
  4. How can I top up a prepaid card?

The load methods depend on the «status» of your card. When the card is delivered it is an introductory card till you do an upgrade. For the introductory card there are restrictions in terms of load functionalities and limits.
